Terraced vantage points along the winding streets of Kyoto, surrounded by pockets of gardens, offer contrasting sensations of peace and intrigue, and are the primary informants of the design intent behind the project. Rectilinear lines in the form of pillars, cross beams, and screens reference traditional Japanese architecture and serve as organizational guidelines for improved wayfinding. Horizontally running features visually lower the ceiling height and reinforce a more intimate atmosphere, while vertical columns and wall extensions heighten the sense of seclusion within rooms. Defined color palettes further divide the space into distinct regions much like the districts of the surrounding city.
